Past President, IE(I)

Er.P.M.Chacko Born on 18th February 1929, completed his engineering education from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum in 1952. He was the first Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamanglam, Ernakulam District, Kerala. Subsequently he became a Member of AICTE for the two years and later became Member of National Board of Accreditation. From 1956-1962 he was in direct charge of the development activities of Madras Port Trust. He was also Chief Engineer of Harrisons & Crosfield Ltd., London (the first Indian to be elevated to this position) was directly and indirectly involved in a lot of developmental works in different Sates of India including Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and West Bengal. During this period, he helped for the design, fabrication and erection of structures for Cochin Shipyard Ltd. After retirement from regular work, he was very much involved with Greater Cochin Development Authority. He was responsible for the execution of the floodlight for the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Kochi for conducting Santhosh Trophy Football Tournament. He was involved in setting up of primary factory units for palm oil extraction in India in consultation with the Stock-Amsterdam, Netherlands who were recognized as world pioneers in Palm Oil extraction. He was a life fellow of many professional institutions and still continues to be linked with educational related activities. Er.P.M.Chacko was elected President of IEI for the year 1994-95 and took over the Presidentship on 01.01.1994. He was again reelected as President of IEI for the term 1995-96. This a very rare honour for Er.P.M.Chacko. During his presidential period he attended World Energy Council at Cape Town, South Africa and also Triennial Congress held at Tokyo. Er.PM.Chacko found that the report presented during this Council Meeting, are anti developing countries and subjected strongly for making certain changes and made few additional points in the draft report to help the developing countries. Finally after discussion, his suggestions were fully accepted by World Energy Council. During his second tenure, he had the privilege of being invited to address the main session of Commonwealth Engineers’ Council which was celebrating its Golden Jubilee in 1995. It is perhaps a coincidence that during the one hundred years, there has been only one Keralite as IEI President, who happens to be Er.P.M.Chacko and that too for two terms. He was the Member of the Planning Commission, Government of India and later was the Chief Advisor of Water and Power Consultancy Services Ltd., Government of India Undertaking. As a Rotarian he had initiated many service projects in and around Cochin useful to public at large.
